Litter in Westbury

Whilst walking around Westbury over the last few days, I have noticed just how much litter is lying around in our town.

In the Market Place square last week, there was what seemed to be an explosion of chewing gum scattered all over the floor by the bench. There looked to be about ten packets of chewing gum that had been opened and thrown on the floor, some chewed up into balls and some still whole pieces. What is most annoying about this is that the bin is about a foot away from the bench. Also in Market Place were polystyrene boxes which were probably from someone’s chips as well as crisp packets and an abundance of cigarette butts.

Throughout the rest of Westbury, I saw cider bottles, cigarette packets, food wrappers and old newspapers.

What I found most bemusing was that most of the litter scattered around seems to be within a few feet of a dustbin.

Walking down some of the footpaths, in the corner up against fences were piles of rubbish – everything from peoples old garden waste to children’s high chairs.

Is it not possible for people to put their rubbish in the bin? Why can people not take their unwanted items to charity shops who are crying out for items to sell?

Have you noticed more rubbish than usual in Westbury?

If you saw someone dropping their rubbish – would you say something?
